“Natural selection” in a test tube


With the constant evolution of Science we are embarking on many new frontiers, arguably no bigger leap has been made in science than in the field of Genetics with the Human Genome Project being completed in 2003. More recently the advancement of diagnostic tools such as Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis, karyotyping and karyomapping allow us to select for certain favorable characteristics. This has led to the controversial idea of “designer babies” where parents to be could choose certain cosmetic traits that they want their kids to have like eye color, complexion hair texture and color and even the sex of the baby, this is because these phenotypes are controlled by relatively few genes. Traits such as height and intelligence are dependent on multi-gentetic factors and even then can be influenced by environmental factors.
